The W201 introduced the now standard five link rear suspension and the W124 continued with it. This allowed for previously unattainable ride and road holding.

Apr 9, 2011 · As to the staying away from 4matics I can't comment on that as we didn't get them here in AUS. I personally like the w124 over w123 (others won't agree) as the w124 is a much more modern looking car yet isn't too modern to be over complicated for maintenance and the w124 is 1 of the tough built Mercs from yesteryear.

Sep 25, 2005 · There's one w124 that is a few notches above even the 560SEC.....the w124 500E / E500. It has W140 interior luxury, V8 326hp with 354lbft torque (22 lb ft more than the M119 in the r129 - the 500E M119 had revised intakes) and body styling that no other non-AMG MB (apart from the Cosworth w201's) left the factory with....the link with Porsche simply adds to the quality.
