The chief of police in Washington, D.C., will allow the Metropolitan Police Department to work with federal immigration authorities to arrest illegal immigrants, an unprecedented move that follows President Donald Trump's crackdown on crime in the city.

Washington, DC, Police Chief Pamela Smith signed an executive order Thursday allowing DC police officers to share information about people not in their custody with federal immigration enforcement agencies such as ICE — as President Donald Trump continues his federal takeover of law enforcement in the nation’s capital and crackdown on illegal immigration.

D.C. police officers can assist federal immigration agencies in limited circumstances following an Executive Order issued by Police Chief Pamela Smith on Thursday.
