Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas, one of the most accomplished trainers in the history of horse racing, has died at 89.

Lukas trained thousands of thoroughbred horses, and 51 ran in 31 different Kentucky Derbys. He won the race four times.

Churchill Downs said D. Wayne Lukas passed away at his home in Louisville Saturday night, June 28. The 89-year-old had been hospitalized for the previous week, battling a severe infection. Churchill said he turned down an aggressive treatment plan and returned home earlier this week to spend time with his family.
