Split Rock Lighthouse was commissioned in 1910, and operated until 1969. The State of Minnesota took over the property in 1971, and the Minnesota Historical Society has managed the site since 1976.

Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse dates back to 1824 when Congress appropriated $6,500 for the construction of a 30-foot, land-based tower. It wasn't until November 1875 that the lighthouse was first lit.
