The National Weather Service says several locations in Kansas saw record-breaking cold temperatures on Tuesday.

Tuesday brought Topeka its lowest temperatures in almost four years, with the mercury plunging to minus 12 degrees.

With the coldest temperatures of the season on tap for Tuesday, some Kansas City are school systems are delaying the start of school or canceling in-person instruction.

The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory, which will be in effect from 6 p.m. Monday until noon on Tuesday.

The coldest air of the season will begin filtering into the area Friday night, according to the National Weather Service. From Sunday to Tuesday, wind Chills are expected to bottom out between -10 and -20 degrees each morning and only reach the single digits in the afternoon.

Manhattan Regional Airport recorded the lowest temperatures in Kansas on Monday of minus 12 degrees and on Tuesday of minus 15.

A cold front is expected to bring sub-zero temperatures this coming weekend to northeast Kansas, the National Weather Service says.

Dangerously low wind chills will continue through Tuesday morning, with temperatures expected to drop between minus 3 to minus 10 degrees and wind chills as low as minus 20. The National Weather Service has issued a cold weather advisory for the entire area. Tuesday will be sunny with highs near 20 degrees, warming to the mid-30s by Wednesday.
