A beloved parole agent with strong ties to Sacramento is being remembered not only for his dedication to public service but also for the profound impact he had both through his work and through the game he loved.

The killing of Joshua Lemont Byrd, 40, is the first line-of-duty loss for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation since 2018.

The shooting occurred just before 1 p.m. Thursday inside the Alameda County parole office on Edgewater Drive, police said. Police sources said the suspect, later identified as 48-year-old Brian Keith Hall, was a parolee. The parole officer was taken to Highland Hospital where he died.
