A 24-year-old man faces court in Fiji over the alleged rape and sexual assault of a 21-year-old Melbourne woman in the south Pacific nation.

Authorities in Fiji have charged a man with the alleged rape and sexual assault of a 21-year-old member of a Virgin Australia flight crew on New Year's Day, a police official in the Pacific island nation said on Saturday.

The 24-year-old farmer allegedly attacked the 21-year-old flight attendant after a New Year’s Eve party in Nadi.

The alleged victim, a 21-year-old Melbourne woman, was separated from the rest of her crew during a night out in Martintar, a popular entertainment district in Nadi.

A man charged over the rape and sexual assault of a female airline crew member in Fiji is expected to face court. According to local media sources, he is set to appear at Nadi Magistrates Court on Monday and his case could be referred to the nation’s High Court due to the seriousness of his alleged offences.

Authorities in Fiji said they are investigating allegations that members of a Virgin Australian crew were robbed and raped on New Year 's Day. The "regrettable" incidents happened in the nightclub region of Nadi, a popular tourist destination and the South Pacific country's third-largest city, said deputy Prime Minister Viliame R. Gavoka.

The man has been charged with one count of rape and another count of sexual assault and will face Nadi Magistrates Court on Monday.
