The White House is lowering expectations for any breakthrough from President Trump’s summit Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, using terms like “listening session” and “feel-out meeting” to describe the planned discussion about the war in Ukraine.

Russia has signaled to the U.S. that it may be willing to end the war in Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told reporters Tuesday.

According to the White House, Friday’s meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, will not end with a ceasefire or sweeping trade agreements. Officials say the meeting is meant for Trump to judge Putin directly and decide if there is a real path toward ending the war in Ukraine.
